Heavy Duty All Terrain Robot Kit

This is our Heavy Duty ATR kit. It is an extremely rugged well built robot. It is built with the same design approach as the Deluxe ATR for capacity and motor connections, but does not have the fancy shell and covers. It has the ability to drive around with very heavy loads. If more than 25lbs are put on it, you should go with a chain drive. Look at our ATR building page and follow the various links to learn more about the robots size and capacity. The wheels are axle mounted and supported using two sealed ball bearings. Each of the four axles are driven by a large and powerful IG42 Gear motor via a cogged timing belt to yield a very smooth and slip free mode of operation. For loads greater than 25lbs the cogged belts can be replaced with chains. The ends of the shafts are exposed on the inside if you wish to mount encoders to them. There are even mounts for encoders concentric to the shaft. There are slots in the side panels that allow easy assembly of the motor and belts and adjustment of the belt tension. The motors and transmission allow this robot to climb walls. The wheels of this robot are our Tamiya 6.75" Dia. All-Terrain Tires. The wheel hubs have a hex coupling that matches to our axles for a slip free engagement. The robots dimensions are ~20.75" wide and ~19.75" long (wheel to wheel edge). The base is about 12.25" x 16.25". The robot has a ~2.25" clearance.

The frame is made of 1/8" thick aircraft grade aluminum. The design uses all laser cut parts with mortise and tenon design for precise alignment and mating of the parts. The chassis is completely welded using TIG and MIG.

The kit provides you with what you need to make a great All-Terrain robot. Below are many options to make the robot a RC unit, or just power it with PWMs and use a microcontroller. We include a hardware kit and electrical kits to get you going. We also offer assembly of this robot if you wish. When you purchase this kit you will get access to our assembly manual that contains color images and step by step instructions. There are a lot of options and additions you can select, the links of all the items are included below. Follow the links for details of each item and option.

For further details and descriptions of the ATR, see our ATR Robot Building Page . Additionally, you can see our general ATR page for videos of the ATR robot in action.

Standard Items:
The following items are standard with this package:
Fully welded ATR Aluminum Frame with hardware, belts, pulleys, along with the following stock items:
ATR and Vectoring Robot Hardware Kit - TD-021-000 (Qty 1)
6.75 inch Tire Wheel Set - TAM-007-000 (Qty 2 sets)
Electric Motor Hookup Kit - TE-024-000
(Qty 4)
Electric Power Hookup Kit - TE-025-000
(Qty 1)
15 Amp Connector Set - TE-027-015
(Qty 2)
Fully Welded Chassis (Qty 1)
Motor Selection:
For the motors, the standard motor is our 252 RPM motor, but you can also opt for the 122 RPM motor if you want a more power and a less speed. We also offer the 75RPM motor for a whole lot of power and a even slower speed.
Drive Belt Selection:

We recommend the belts for the 252 RPM motor and added weight of less than 25lbs. They are smoother running, less maintenance, and easier to install. If you need to handle larger loads or are using the higher torque (slow speed) motors then you should get the chain.

The motor to wheel gearing is 14:18 for the belts. The wheels are 6.75 inches in diameter. So... 252*14/18*3.14*6.75/12 = ~350 fpm (4mph) travel speed (of course the motor speed is nominal at 24V the batteries usually run about 27 volts so the RPMs are probably faster and then if there is a lot of load on the motors they will run slower, etc. etc.) Any ways, its a pretty quick and powerful robot. The chains will give you a 10:15 ratio.

Battery Options:
For the motor batteries, you can choose for one or two of our 24V batteries. Battery life depends greatly on how you use the robot, what terrain you use it in, how often and sharp you turn (since its skid steering which draws considerable power), etc. A single battery can last from 1/2 hour to 4 hours depending on usage.

24V 3500 mAHr NiMH Battery Pack - TE-023-020
(Qty 2)
RC Controller:
If you wish to make the robot remote controlled, you can choice any of these controllers. You need 2 channels to control the robot drive functions. If you plan on adding camera pan and tilt or other options you should get the 4 channel controller. If you want to control lights or other functions, you should get a higher channel radio. Our digital QPCM (Quick Pulse Controlled Modulation) systems offer better stability around noisy motors and feature fail safe modes for when the receiver is out of range.
Hitec Ranger II 2 Channel 75MHz RC Controller Pkg - TE-033-002

Hitec Laser 4 Channel 75MHz RC Controller Pkg - TE-033-004

Hitec Laser 6 Channel 75MHz RC Controller Pkg - TE-033-005

Hitec Optic 6 Transmitter and QPCM Rx - TE-059-006

Hitec Eclipse 7 Transmitter and QPCM Rx - TE-059-006
RC and Motor controller interface Options:

If you are going to use this ATR as a radio controlled robot you will need an RC interface. The RC interface takes the RC receiver signal and drives the motors, servos, outputs, etc. We now offer different options for this control interface. The MD22 Devantech Dual Motor Driver is an all in one package. It interprets the RC signal and has a 2 channel motor controller on board. We have also developed our own RC interface board. Our RC interface offers better noise filtering and lost signal handling, dramatically increasing the effective range and control over the MD22. Additionally it drives relays so you can drive high current loads with the RC such as a motor (fwd/off/rev) and or lights (on/off)

Alternatively, if you just want to drive the robot via a microcontroller or other device, you will need motor controllers, but you will not need the RC interface. Motor controller options are listed at he bottom of this list.

Foam Filled Tire Option:
This option should be selected if you wish us to fill your ATR tires with foam. The procedure can also be done by yourself and is outlined in the ATR manual. The standard tires are pneumatic and can handle the weight of the ATR + ~25 lbs with no problem, but if you want to add a bunch more batteries, or other equipment, or if you don't want the tires to give during impact you can fill the tires with foam.
Assembly:
You receive access to our fully illustrated manual that helps you assemble the robot. If you wish you can have us assemble the robot.

See our ATR Robot Building Page for additional options and links to our controllers, sensors, and additional batteries. Don't forget to get your battery chargers either. The different chargers are explained on our ATR Robot Building Page also.

This item is built to order and usually ships within 4-7 business days depending on volume and assembly options.
